Efficient non toxic marine paint that prevents fouling
Smart Coating – Alive with the ocean
Introducing the launch of Neptune Formula; a patented non-toxic shiphull paint. The paint contains no heavy metals or other toxins and has been developed in cooperation with the Tjärnö Marine Biology laboratory in Northern Bohus County, Sweden, as well as with cutting-edge surface chemical competence in Stockholm.
Neptune Formula is based on a completely new hull paint technique, i.e. a biological function that recreates natural processes. In short, the paint attracts microorganisms, which in turn create an unfavourable environment for larger organisms. The microorganisms reduce the oxygen level on a thin layer of the hull, creating an inhospitable environment for molluscs and barnacles.
The active ingredient is made up of vegetable proteins, where the raw materials come from local forestry and agriculture. A further benefit is that the paint waste resulting from hull maintenance can be composted. The paint is non-voltaic and can thus be used on metal surfaces.
During the summer of 2007, several paint types were tested around the Swedish and Danish coast. During the winter of 2007-2008, the paint was also tested in Florida, USA where the temperature and salt conditions in the water provide more favourable growing conditions for molluscs and barnacles than in Swedish waters.
The launch of the first version of Neptune Formula will take place off the Swedish east coast in 2008. Field studies will be completed in the summer of 2008 off the Swedish west coast in good time for a final launch in 2009. Speed tests will also be carried out to ensure the paint’s performance at higher speeds.
